One In Five Internet Users Targeted In Early 2024

One in five indians suffers cyber crime
Browsers and social media platforms were the most common avenues for these attacks, cybercriminals exploited weaknesses in browsers and their plugins, making these tools prime targets

In the first quarter of 2024, nearly 20 per cent of internet users in India fell victim to cyber threats, with cyberattacks continuing to pose a significant risk. According to a recent study by Kaspersky, 22.9 per cent of users faced web-borne threats, while 20.1 per cent were vulnerable to local threats during this period.

Browsers and social media platforms were the most common avenues for these attacks. Cybercriminals exploited weaknesses in browsers and their plugins, making these tools prime targets. One particularly dangerous form of attack identified in the report is file-less malware. Unlike traditional malware, file-less malware uses legitimate tools already present in the system, which means attackers don’t need to trick users into downloading malicious files.

Social engineering tactics such as phishing, baiting, and pretexting were also widespread, putting many users at risk. From January to March 2024, Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) reported blocking 12,454,797 different internet-borne cyber threats.

“Malware remains a major threat to the users in India. Targeted malware attacks continue to be a major source of worry for organizations and users alike. Stealth threats and the exploitation of user vulnerabilities are seen to plague the systems of the users in India,” said Purshottam Bhatia, Head of Sales, Consumer Solutions, South Asia, Kaspersky.

The study highlights the ongoing challenges that internet users in India face in protecting their online security, emphasising the need for increased awareness and stronger cybersecurity measures.
