Pune Station’s AI Cameras Successfully Identify Blacklisted Individuals

AI-powered surveillance cameras installed at Pune station have proven to be effective in identifying blacklisted individuals and touts, according to recent reports.

The collaboration between the Indian Railways and JioThings Limited, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms Limited, unveiled this innovative pilot project last August. Aimed at enhancing security measures at the station, the project has since been undergoing trials.

Strategically positioned within the station premises, four artificial intelligence (AI) cameras have been deployed. One camera is stationed at the entrance, another at the exit, while two are strategically placed within the Public Reservation System (PRS) area.

These advanced cameras possess the remarkable ability to convert video footage into valuable data, providing crucial insights into visitor activities. Recent data shared by the commercial department of the Pune Railway highlights the effectiveness of this surveillance system.

Over a week-long period from February 26 to March 3, a total of 9,625 individuals were recorded visiting the PRS premises. Among them, 7,311 were identified as returning visitors, while 2,314 were first-time visitors. Interestingly, the analysis also revealed that only 1.1 percent of visitors were observed wearing masks, shedding light on compliance with health protocols.

An official from the Divisional Commercial Department of the railway explained that the system integrates inputs from the Railway Police Force (RPF) regarding habitual offenders and blacklisted scalpers. These AI cameras are equipped with facial recognition technology and can capture images from various angles, aiding in the identification of individuals.

The successful implementation of this AI-powered surveillance system marks a significant step forward in enhancing security and preventing unauthorized activities at Pune station. However, authorities continue to monitor and evaluate its efficacy as the trial phase progresses.
