SC Takes Action After Scammer Impersonates Chief Justice

Chief Justice Chandrachud himself raised the issue after the message gained traction online

The Supreme Court of India has taken  action after a scammer, posing as Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, used social media to request money for a cab fare. The incident came to light after a screenshot of the scam message went viral on social media over the weekend, prompting the Supreme Court to involve the Delhi Police’s cyber-crime unit.

According to reports, the scammer, using Chief Justice Chandrachud’s name and image, contacted a social media user named Kailash Meghwal via the platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The message stated, “Hello, I am CJI and we have urgent meeting of the collegium and I am stuck at Connaught Place can you send me 500rs for cab?” The impersonator added a touch of authenticity by following up with, “Sent from iPad.”

The fraudster claimed to be stranded in Delhi’s Connaught Place and urgently needed ₹500 to reach the Supreme Court for a Collegium meeting. The message promised the money would be returned once the scammer reached the court.

Chief Justice Chandrachud himself raised the issue after the message gained traction online. In response, the Supreme Court’s security department, under the CJI’s direction, filed a formal complaint with the cyber-crime department of the Delhi Police on Tuesday.

This incident follows a similar case earlier this year, where a 42-year-old man was arrested for impersonating a Delhi Police crime branch inspector. The individual was accused of duping two people out of ₹4 lakh by pretending to sell luxury cars and expensive cell phones at court auctions. The scammer was arrested in March after a cheating case was registered at the Subzi Mandi police station in January.

The latest impersonation attempt highlights the growing concern over online scams and the importance of vigilance in verifying the authenticity of online communications.
