Thai Security Agency Steps Up Monitoring Of Foreign Communities

The directive, issued via radio dispatch from ISOC’s Second Operational Command — which oversees immigration-related issues — instructs officials to monitor communities with significant foreign populations

Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) has directed its provincial and district branches to step up surveillance in areas where foreigners have settled, aiming to ensure legal compliance and prevent disturbances to local residents.

The directive, issued via radio dispatch from ISOC’s Second Operational Command — which oversees immigration-related issues — instructs officials to monitor communities with significant foreign populations. The move comes amid concerns over rising tensions between foreigners and local residents, particularly in popular tourist areas.

According to the order, ISOC offices must work to prevent minor disputes from escalating into broader community conflicts that could impact international relations. The focus is on safeguarding national security, supporting the local economy, and fostering a peaceful coexistence between Thais and foreigners.

The decision follows recent altercations between Israeli tourists and local residents in Pai district of Mae Hong Son province. Since early February, several businesses and restaurants in the area have displayed signs refusing service to Israeli nationals after reports of disruptive behaviour by tourists at local establishments and a hospital.

Approximately 3,000 Israelis visit Pai each month, with the number rising to 4,000 during the high season. The town, known for its cool weather, affordable accommodations, and laid-back atmosphere, has become a preferred destination for Israeli tourists.

A source from the Israel Embassy in Bangkok explained that Israeli travellers often favour northern mountainous regions like Pai over coastal destinations such as Phuket or Pattaya due to Israel’s own Mediterranean coastline. The source added, “Pai is famous among Israelis because of its friendly people, delicious food, and the availability of kosher cuisine, which meets the dietary laws of Jewish people from ingredients to preparation.”

ISOC officials have been instructed to prioritise the nation’s interests while ensuring that foreigners and locals can coexist peacefully. Authorities will work to prevent conflict and promote sustainable harmony between communities as tourism continues to be a key driver of the local economy.
