Tripura Positions Itself As Northeast India’s Data By New Cyber Push

The Indian state bordering Bangladesh has launched its first comprehensive cyber security policy, aiming to protect citizen data and government systems

The government of Tripura has unveiled a major new initiative to secure its digital future, launching the Tripura Cyber Security Policy 2025 (TCSP 2.0) and aligning itself with the Union government’s mission to build a cyber-resilient India.

The policy launch, which coincided with the national ‘Cyber Bharat Setu’ workshop in Agartala, was marked by remarks from S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), who emphasised the state’s potential to become a key IT and data hub for the entire Northeast region.

“The most important aspect of the Tripura Cyber Security Policy is to protect the citizens of Tripura from potential cyber attacks and ensure that data stays safe,” Krishnan stated, calling the policy a significant move towards digital trust and accountability.

The move comes as the reliance on digital services in India’s regional states accelerates, bringing with it increased exposure to online threats, data leaks, and sophisticated cyber fraud. The TCSP 2.0 is designed to serve as a comprehensive guiding framework:

System Security: It mandates enhanced security protocols for all state Information Technology (IT) and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems.

Capacity Building: The policy focuses on strengthening institutional mechanisms and cyber resilience through training and collaboration.

Public-private Cooperation: It promotes joint actions across government departments, public-sector enterprises, and the private sector to ensure a unified defence against digital adversaries.

Crucially, the MeitY Secretary noted that Tripura’s strategic geographical position and robust infrastructure offer “ideal conditions for setting up data centres.” The state’s accessibility to the international internet backbone via neighbouring Bangladesh, coupled with stable power and water supplies, has positioned it as a compelling contender for attracting global capability centres and technology-led investments.

The policy launch was accompanied by the inauguration of the Tripura Cyber Security Awareness Month 2025 (TCSAM 2025) campaign, themed “Cyber Jagrit Tripura” (Cyber Aware Tripura), aimed at strengthening digital literacy and hygiene among government officials, students, and the general public through awareness programs and simulated scenario-based exercises. The dual initiative underscores the state’s commitment to proactive defence rather than merely reactive compliance.
