US Schools Offers Free AI Firearm Detection Software

The U.S. government has successfully shut down a significant cyber threat posed by the China-supported hacking group, "Volt Typhoon."
A technology firm is offering its AI-powered firearm detection software free of charge to every K-12 school in the United States

Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions (AITX) announced that its security subsidiary, Robotic Assistance Devices (RAD), has launched *Bailey’s Promise*, a programme that will grant up to 10 free software licences to every school. The system, which uses artificial intelligence to detect visible firearms in real time via existing security cameras, aims to give schools crucial early warning before a shooting can unfold.

While the software licence is provided at no cost, schools must pay a one-off onboarding fee of \$499 and a \$99 monthly service charge. These fees cover configuration, technical support and connection to up to 10 IP-based cameras. Schools seeking wider coverage can add more cameras at half the usual per-camera licence fee.

The initiative builds on RAD’s earlier campaign, *Bailey’s Gift*, which donated firearm detection hardware to a smaller number of schools. Both efforts are named in honour of 15-year-old Bailey Holt, who was killed in a 2018 school shooting. Her mother, Secret Holt, has since become a vocal advocate for school safety and RAD’s technology.

“The fact that RAD is now offering this technology to every school means everything to me,” Holt said. “No school should hesitate. If this software can help prevent even one tragedy, it’s worth it. Time is a thief, and it doesn’t discriminate. The next victim could be anyone’s child.”

RAD’s founder and chief executive, Steve Reinharz, said the programme was a chance to act before violence strikes. “We hear it every time: thoughts, prayers, statements of concern, promises to do better,” he said. “Bailey’s Promise gives every school the power to detect firearms before a tragedy unfolds.”

The software can be integrated with most modern IP security cameras without additional hardware or major system changes. Once installed, it continuously scans for visible firearms, triggering immediate alerts and activating pre-set responses such as audible alarms, mobile notifications, emergency escalation, and lockdown procedures.

AITX has applied for the technology to be recognised under the US Department of Homeland Security’s Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act. If approved, it would be classified as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology, providing liability protections for both the company and participating schools.
