ZeroEyes, the developer of the only AI-powered gun detection video analytics platform to receive the U.S. Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, has published its annual Gun Violence Report, offering a detailed analysis of gun-related incidents across the United States. Unlike conventional studies that focus solely on mass shootings, this report provides a broader perspective, examining gun violence patterns across different locations and circumstances.

Compiled by the ZeroEyes Gun Violence Research Center, the report analyses 5,462 gun-related incidents and sheds light on critical trends shaping the national security landscape. It finds that 90 per cent of reported gun incidents resulted in either fatalities or injuries, underscoring the severity of the crisis. Notably, 30 per cent of cases were fatal, while an additional 60 per cent led to injuries.

Key Findings: Where & When Gun Violence Occurs

One of the most significant takeaways from the report is the prevalence of gun incidents in outdoor spaces, where 3,235 cases were recorded. This highlights the vulnerability of open areas and the need for increased vigilance in public settings.

Another alarming pattern emerged in September, which saw 728 incidents, making it the deadliest month. This spike in gun violence coincided with the back-to-school period, indicating an increased risk for students and school communities.

Among high-risk locations, retail spaces and K-12 schools were identified as primary targets. 1,459 incidents were reported in retail environments, while 1,417 incidents occurred in schools, reinforcing the urgent need for enhanced security measures in these spaces.

The study also revealed significant law enforcement challenges, with 1,885 suspects evading capture. This statistic points to difficulties in both immediate response and long-term tracking of perpetrators.

Additional Insights: Weapons, High-Risk Zones & Timing

The report provides a deeper understanding of the types of weapons used, highlighting that handguns were the most common, accounting for 2,120 incidents. However, 281 cases involved imitation or non-lethal weapons, demonstrating that even the appearance of a firearm—whether real or not—can escalate conflicts and induce widespread panic.

Another overlooked danger zone identified in the study is parking lots, where 1,848 incidents occurred. These areas, often considered safe, have become hotspots for violent altercations, raising concerns about security measures in commercial and public parking spaces.

The report also identifies a critical window of vulnerability, with incidents occurring most frequently at 12:55 p.m. This suggests that midday—rather than late-night hours—poses a greater risk for shootings across various industries and locations.

Data-Driven Approach To Reducing Gun Violence

ZeroEyes’ Gun Violence Research Center aims to provide valuable insights that can help schools, businesses, and communities implement more effective safety measures. The data-driven approach enables organisations to make informed decisions about security investments, emergency preparedness, and preventive strategies.

“This unprecedented analysis doesn’t just present numbers—it provides a roadmap for action,” said Erin Acheson, Vice President of Business Intelligence at ZeroEyes. “By understanding the when, where, and how of gun violence, we can develop targeted strategies to save lives and create safer communities.”
