Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport To Pioneer Document-Free Travel By 2025

The Smart Travel Project, spearheaded by Zayed International Airport, is set to make it the world’s first fully document-free airport

By 2025, travelers at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport may be able to board their flights without the need for passports, IDs, or even tickets, thanks to the airport’s Smart Travel Project. This innovative initiative aims to revolutionise the passenger experience by utilising biometric technology at every checkpoint.

The Smart Travel Project, spearheaded by Zayed International Airport, is set to make it the world’s first fully document-free airport. In a recent LinkedIn post, the airport announced, “By 2025, Zayed International Airport aims to become the world’s first fully document-free airport, integrating cutting-edge biometric technology at every checkpoint.” The post also highlighted that this advancement will significantly streamline the boarding process, reduce wait times, and improve overall efficiency.

Biometrics, which involve using biological data like fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris scans, are already in use in certain parts of the airport, particularly on flights operated by Etihad Airways. According to a report by Business Standard, these sensors can quickly verify a traveler’s identity and travel status simply by scanning their face or eyes.

The push towards biometric-based travel is not just a technical upgrade but also aligns with passenger preferences. An October 2023 survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) found that 75% of passengers preferred using biometric data over traditional passports and boarding passes. Additionally, 46% of those who used biometrics reported a high level of satisfaction. However, concerns about data security remain, with 40% of travelers stating they would be more open to biometric solutions if they were confident their personal information was secure—a noticeable increase from 33% in 2022.

While no airport has yet gone fully passport-free, similar initiatives are being developed globally. Singapore’s Changi Airport is collaborating with its immigration authority to create a biometric clearance system for both residents and tourists. Additionally, biometric terminals have been implemented at Hong Kong International Airport, Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda, and New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

As airports around the world explore these advanced technologies, Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport is poised to lead the way, setting a new standard for the future of air travel.
