According to a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Delhi registered the highest number of crimes against women among 19 metropolitan cities in 2022
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has instructed officials to install CCTV cameras in women-only ‘pink parks’ situated across various zones of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to enhance the safety and security of female visitors, an official revealed.
The horticulture department of the civic body is expected to commence the installation of CCTV cameras in these women-only parks, which are being established across all 250 wards, the official disclosed.
“The mayor’s directive aims to create a safe and secure environment for women and children frequenting these parks,” stated the official. “Additionally, it will aid in curbing illegal activities and crimes against women, which are often reported in public parks.”
According to a report by the(NCRB), Delhi registered the highest number of crimes against women among 19 metropolitan cities in 2022.
The data showed a 1.25 per cent year-on-year increase in crimes against women, rising to 14,158 cases from 13,982 in 2021. Last year in July, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to address the escalating crime rates against women in the city, particularly after a young woman was murdered in a south Delhi park.
“We frequently receive complaints from locals regarding illegal activities, such as drug consumption, in public parks. If the MCD installs CCTV cameras in these areas, it will undoubtedly aid in curbing this menace,” mentioned a Delhi Police official.
Presently, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has 15 to 20 women-only parks operational in the city, with plans to establish around 250 such parks in each ward. The corporation is yet to finalise a plan for installing CCTV cameras but is likely to propose and engage an agency for the task soon, added the MCD official.
