Chinese security officials have taken stringent action by shutting down a staggering 34,000 online accounts spreading rumours. Since the initiation of this crackdown campaign in April, more than 6,300 individuals have faced penalties, with over 4,800 cases being addressed.

Li Tong, an official from the Ministry of Public Security, disclosed these numbers, emphasising the authorities’ commitment to curbing the dissemination of false information. The nationwide effort to tackle online rumours is set to continue throughout 2024, reflecting the government’s dedication to sustained social stability.

Speaking to the media, Li Tong highlighted the comprehensive nature of the campaign, employing various measures to ensure effectiveness and tangible results. The goal is not only to address immediate concerns but also to create a lasting impact on the online environment.
