India and Malaysia have taken significant steps to enhance their security and defence collaboration during their first-ever security dialogue held in New Delhi. This initiative follows Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to India, where the two nations elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
The dialogue, co-chaired by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Malaysia’s National Security Council Director General Raja Dato Nushirwan Bin Zainal Abidin, focused on key issues of mutual interest. Discussions spanned the global and regional security landscape, with both countries reviewing and advancing cooperation in areas such as defence, maritime security, and counter-terrorism.
Deepening Security Collaboration
According to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides agreed to strengthen their collaboration in counter-terrorism, cyber security, maritime safety, and the defence industry. This includes measures to enhance efforts in deradicalisation and countering extremist ideologies.
The two countries also explored avenues for cooperation in critical minerals and rare earths, highlighting the growing strategic significance of these resources in global supply chains.
Building On Existing Ties
In recent years, India and Malaysia have expanded their defence and security partnership through bilateral agreements and joint military exercises designed to increase inter-operability between their armed forces. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to India last August marked a pivotal moment, laying the foundation for greater strategic engagement between the two nations.
