Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is set to receive a significant security upgrade with the installation of 150 advanced baggage and body scanning machines. According to a report by Lokmat, Central Railway has already issued a tender for the procurement of seven baggage scanners and 143 body scanners. The installation process is expected to be completed within 18 months.

CSMT, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of India’s busiest railway hubs, handling around 11.5 lakh passengers daily. Security at the station is currently overseen by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. However, concerns about passenger safety have emerged recently due to the malfunctioning of existing security equipment. The decision to introduce new scanners aims to bolster security and address these concerns.

The high-tech baggage scanners will be capable of detecting 32 different types of items, including those considered highly dangerous for rail travel. Given that many long-distance passengers carry heavy luggage, the new system is expected to enhance the monitoring of belongings efficiently.

One of the major challenges at CSMT is managing over 100 entry points, which makes regulating passenger movement difficult. The advanced scanning machines will enable authorities to monitor passengers seamlessly without imposing strict movement restrictions. Security personnel will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring a safe environment for travellers.

This move is part of Central Railway’s broader efforts to integrate cutting-edge technology with human surveillance to create a safer and more secure travel experience. By enhancing security infrastructure, authorities aim to address growing concerns while maintaining smooth operations at one of the country’s busiest railway stations.
