Vehicle theft has been a significant concern at DIA in recent years
Travelling through Denver International Airport (DIA) during the holiday season can be a stressful experience, with parking and security among the primary concerns for many passengers. In response, the airport has implemented measures to address these challenges and improve the overall experience for travellers.
Adjustments To Parking During Peak Season
Michael Konopasek, spokesperson for DIA, emphasised the importance of planning ahead during the busy holiday period.
“During busy holiday travel seasons like the one we’re in right now, it’s not uncommon for there to be some adjustments made on parking,” said Konopasek.
Travellers are encouraged to visit the airport’s website, where real-time updates on available parking facilities are provided.
“Go to our website, and you’ll see listed on the website real-time information that shows you what parking facilities are open,” he added.
Efforts To Address Vehicle Theft
Vehicle theft has been a significant concern at DIA in recent years. From January to November 2023, 716 motor vehicle thefts were reported at the airport. However, thanks to enhanced security measures and coordinated efforts with law enforcement, that number has dropped significantly.
Between January and November 2024, DIA reported 273 vehicle thefts – a 62 per cent decrease from the previous year.
“This improvement is the result of safety enhancements we’ve made and the diligent work of law enforcement,” said Konopasek.
The crackdown on vehicle theft includes a recent announcement by Denver District Attorney Beth McCann regarding indictments against an auto theft ring that operated partially at DIA.
“People who steal cars in Denver will be caught and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” said McCann.
Continued Efforts & Traveller Awareness
While the decrease in thefts is significant, DIA officials acknowledge that even one theft is one too many. They are committed to continuing their efforts to combat crime across their parking facilities.
Travellers are reminded to remain vigilant and proactive.
“It’s important to just be mindful of your surroundings and make sure that you take all the precautions that you would anywhere else,” said Konopasek.
Additional Services For Travellers
To assist passengers returning to their vehicles, DIA offers a 24-hour battery jump service, providing added convenience and support for those who may encounter a dead battery.
As the holiday season continues, DIA remains focused on ensuring a smoother and safer experience for all its travellers.
