The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) has announced a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on Saturday, demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was allegedly murdered and sexually assaulted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The protest is part of a larger movement, with doctors across the country expressing their outrage and calling for stronger security measures for healthcare professionals.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community and beyond, with widespread protests erupting in various states. The body of the trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run college, leading to demands for immediate action against those responsible and for enhanced security in medical institutions.
The case, initially handled by local police, has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Dr. Suvrankar Datta, Vice President of FAIMA and a senior resident doctor at AIIMS New Delhi, emphasized the importance of the upcoming protest in a video message released on August 30. “We are organizing a massive peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar on August 31, demanding justice for our colleague from RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal. We will also ask the Central government for a centralised protection act for healthcare professionals to prevent violence,” Dr. Datta stated.
He urged the medical community to stand in solidarity, saying, “Before the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for September 5, I urge doctors to join us at Jantar Mantar from 3 pm to 5 pm. We want to show the world our strength and that we stand united as we ask for justice for our sister. We demand an increase in security in hospitals across the country.”
In a related development, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kolkata has suspended the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, amid the ongoing CBI investigation.
The protest at Jantar Mantar is expected to draw significant attention as the medical community continues to push for justice and better protection for healthcare workers nationwide.
