FAA Implements Temporary Flight Restrictions Over Hudson Yards For Security Concerns

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) for airspace above New York’s Hudson Yards and areas near Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. The restrictions, effective until January 19, come in response to heightened security concerns following a series of drone sightings across the mid-Atlantic region.

Details Of Restrictions

The restrictions prohibit unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations above Hudson Yards, except for activities related to national defence, homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, or disaster response. Commercial drone operations may only proceed with a valid statement of work or an approved special government interest airspace waiver.

The restricted area spans an altitude of 400 feet above ground level, centred around the Teterboro VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) at a radius of 1 nautical mile.Hudson Yards, a key urban development in Manhattan, is located between West 30th and West 43rd Streets, bounded by 7th and 8th Avenues to the east and 12th Avenue to the west. Nearby Teterboro Airport serves as a general aviation hub in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Expanding Scope Of Drone Restrictions

The TFR over Hudson Yards aligns with similar measures implemented in December. On December 18, the FAA announced restrictions for 22 sites across New Jersey, including Jersey City. This list expanded on December 30 to encompass additional “critical infrastructure sites” across the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island.

Specific locations include:

Brooklyn, Bronx (2 locations), and Staten Island (2 locations)

Queens, Far Rockaway, and Oceanside

New York City (2 locations) and Yonkers

Garden City, Lynbrook, and Melville

Hicksville, Holbrook, and Holtsville

Calverton, Commack, and New Castle

Roslyn Heights, Setauket, and Shoreham

Addressing Security Privacy Concerns

The FAA’s decision underscores growing concerns about the misuse of drones in sensitive areas. These restrictions aim to protect vital infrastructure and ensure public safety amidst rising drone activity.

Operators found in violation of these TFRs risk significant penalties, including fines and potential legal action. The FAA urges drone users to adhere to all federal aviation regulations and consult the agency’s official resources for updates.

The temporary restrictions above Hudson Yards and other critical locations reflect a broader effort to address emerging security threats while balancing the needs of recreational and commercial drone operators.
