As part of the FMDA project, over 1,000 new cameras are being installed to enhance surveillance
The operation and maintenance of Faridabad’s CCTV surveillance network are set to be outsourced, with the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) finalising plans to hand over the system to a private firm. The move is aimed at strengthening the city’s security infrastructure, with the selected agency expected to take charge by the end of March.
As part of the FMDA project, over 1,000 new cameras are being installed to enhance surveillance. This comes alongside the existing 1,150 cameras that were set up under the Smart City initiative nearly eight years ago. However, sources indicate that around 40 per cent of these cameras are currently non-functional, hampering efforts to monitor traffic and track suspicious activity.
The CCTV network is connected to the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) in Sector 20, which is responsible for monitoring traffic movement. However, the non-operational cameras have led to blind spots in surveillance, making it difficult to ensure smooth traffic management and effective law enforcement.
The FMDA has allocated Rs 60 crore for the expansion of CCTV coverage, nearly tripling the existing network. A significant upgrade in the new system is the inclusion of face-detection technology, which will be instrumental in identifying individuals and improving security. An official stated that the cameras will primarily be installed at key intersections and crossings to monitor vehicular movement. Additionally, around 100 cameras will be equipped with AI hardware capable of alerting officials about the movement of suspicious individuals.
Before the system is officially handed over, faulty cameras from the previous Smart City initiative will be repaired, an FMDA official confirmed. He added that once the transition is complete, the agency will be responsible for ensuring the security system remains functional and robust.
The selected firm will also have the authority to relocate or replace cameras based on surveillance requirements. Regular reports will be submitted to the authorities to ensure optimal placement and performance.
MDA Chief Engineer Ramesh Bagri stated that the implementation of the plan is expected soon, marking a significant step towards a more efficient and responsive surveillance system in Faridabad.
