HID Report Forecasts Surge In Mobile ID & Biometric Authentication Adoption

The report also sheds light on other significant trends in security and identity solutions. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is increasingly seen as a crucial security measure, with many considering it a precursor to the more comprehensive Zero Trust security model

HID Global’s latest report sheds light on the growing popularity of mobile-based digital IDs and biometric authentication in the security industry. According to the “2024 State of the Security Industry Report,” there’s a notable surge expected in the adoption of Mobile IDs over the next five years. End users anticipate that nearly 80 percent of organizations will embrace mobile IDs, while industry partners are even more optimistic, with a projection of 94 percent adoption. Currently, around 64 percent of organisations already have some form of Mobile ID deployment in place.

However, despite this upward trend, certain sectors still see the necessity of physical ID cards. About 46 per cent of end-users and 59 percent of industry partners emphasise the importance of visible images on ID badges, particularly in industries with high in-person interactions or stringent security requirements like government, healthcare, transportation, and hospitality.

Nevertheless, Mobile IDs offer several benefits, as highlighted by the report. Convenience for users ranks high, praised by 59 percent of respondents, followed by added security (45 percent), and administrative convenience (35 percent).

The report also sheds light on other significant trends in security and identity solutions. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is increasingly seen as a crucial security measure, with many considering it a precursor to the more comprehensive Zero Trust security model. Sustainability is also becoming a key consideration in business decisions, reflecting a growing emphasis on environmentally friendly practices.

Biometrics for identity verification are gaining momentum, with a significant percentage of users adopting fingerprint, palm print, and facial recognition technologies. Additionally, there’s a noticeable shift towards cloud-based identity management solutions, with nearly half of the end users already using or planning to implement such systems.

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise in enhancing identity management and security operations, particularly in analytics. There’s a growing interest among security professionals in AI-enabled solutions to heighten security measures.

The report, based on responses from 2,600 partners, end-users, IT, and security professionals across 11 industries, provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of security and identity solutions.
